SIX CREWED LANDINGS

Apollo landing sites.

All six sites are on the Moon’s near side and are shown schematically.

APOLLO 11 / 1969

Sea of Tranquility

Armstrong and Aldrin made humanity’s first landing on another world.

APOLLO 12 / 1969

Ocean of Storms

A precision landing near the robotic Surveyor 3 spacecraft.

APOLLO 14 / 1971

Fra Mauro

Shepard and Mitchell sampled ejecta from the Imbrium impact.

APOLLO 15 / 1971

Hadley–Apennine

The first Lunar Roving Vehicle explored mountains and a winding rille.

APOLLO 16 / 1972

Descartes Highlands

A geologic expedition into the Moon’s ancient highland terrain.

APOLLO 17 / 1972

Taurus–Littrow

The final Apollo landing included geologist Harrison Schmitt.

Water exists in shadow.

Ice survives in permanently shadowed polar craters, while SOFIA also detected water on sunlit terrain.

The Moon is drifting away.

Laser measurements show it recedes from Earth by roughly 3.8 centimeters each year.

Moonquakes can last.

With little moisture to damp vibrations, some lunar seismic events continue for many minutes.

ABOUT THIS TOOL

Read the Moon’s changing geometry.

This page combines the Moon’s phase, illuminated fraction, distance, rise and set estimates, and practical observing guidance. The phase is a geometric relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon—not a forecast of cloud or seeing.

Local rise/set times are planning estimates. Buildings, trees, terrain, haze, and daylight can hide a Moon that is technically above the horizon.
